How to renew a driving licence

A driving licence is two things at once: permission to drive, and the identity document most people actually carry. Letting it lapse tends to be discovered at the worst moment, which is usually a roadside stop or a car rental desk.

When it expires, and why that varies so much

Renewal intervals range from three years to fifteen depending on the country, and they shorten with age almost everywhere. A licence valid for ten years at thirty may be valid for three at seventy, and for one year beyond a further threshold.

The photograph is often what expires rather than the entitlement to drive. Several countries issue a licence whose driving categories last decades but whose card must be replaced every ten years because the photograph is out of date.

Medical and eyesight requirements

Many countries require an eyesight test at renewal, and some require a full medical above a certain age or for certain vehicle categories. Where a medical is required it is usually the slowest part of the process, because it depends on a doctor's availability rather than the licensing authority's.

Declaring a medical condition does not usually cost you the licence, but failing to declare one can invalidate your insurance. That is a larger problem than a lapsed card.

If you live in a different country from the one that issued it

This is where it gets complicated, and where general advice is least useful. Some countries will renew a licence for a citizen living abroad. Many will not, on the basis that you should hold a licence where you live.

Where an exchange scheme exists, you surrender the old licence for a local one instead of renewing it — a different process with different paperwork and, often, a deadline that starts when you become resident.

Where no exchange exists you may have to sit a local test, sometimes theory and practical both, regardless of how long you have driven.

What an International Driving Permit is and is not

An IDP is a translation of a licence you already hold. It is not a licence, it does not extend an expired one, and it is worthless on its own — it is only valid presented alongside the original.

If your licence is expiring, an IDP does not help. Renew the licence.

Can I drive while the renewal is being processed?

It depends entirely on the country. Some issue a temporary licence or a receipt that carries the same rights; others do not, and driving on an expired licence is treated as driving unlicensed regardless of the pending application. Check before you drive, not after.

Does a renewal reset my licence categories?

Normally no — existing entitlements carry over. Older licences sometimes carry categories no longer issued, and those are usually preserved on renewal, but not always. If yours includes anything unusual, confirm before you send it in.

Can I renew online?

Increasingly yes, if you are in the issuing country, your photograph is on file and no medical is required. Renewing from abroad or with a medical requirement almost always means paper or an appointment.
