Driving licence renewal in Taiwan

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with 公路總局 (Directorate General of Highways).

Renewing a Taiwanese driving license generally involves visiting a Motor Vehicles Office, providing necessary documents, undergoing a physical examination if required, and paying a fee. The process is typically straightforward.

Your timing

Most people initiate the renewal process within three months of their license's expiration date. This allows ample time for scheduling any required physical examinations and for the processing of the new license, avoiding any disruption to driving privileges.

Start 90 days ahead

To allow for physical examination appointments and processing time before the license expires.

The process

  1. 1Confirm eligibility for renewal and check if a physical examination is required (this applies to certain age groups or specific license types).
  2. 2Undergo a physical examination at a designated hospital or clinic, if necessary, and obtain the examination report.
  3. 3Prepare all required documents, including the old driving license, national ID card or ARC, and recent photos.
  4. 4Visit any Motor Vehicles Office (監理所/站) or a delegated public service counter.
  5. 5Submit the application form, all required documents, and the physical examination report (if applicable).
  6. 6Pay the renewal fee.
  7. 7Receive the new driving license.

What to bring

  • Original national ID card (國民身分證) for citizens, or Alien Resident Certificate (ARC, 外僑居留證) for foreign residents.
  • Original driving license (駕駛執照).
  • Two recent color photos (1-inch or 2-inch, on a white background).
  • Physical examination report (體格檢查表), if required (e.g., for drivers aged 60 and over, or for professional licenses).
  • Seal or signature (印章或簽名).

The current fee for renewing a driving license is NT$200. This information is typically found on the Directorate General of Highways website or confirmed at a Motor Vehicles Office.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Check if a physical examination is required based on age or license type before visiting the Motor Vehicles Office, as this needs to be done beforehand at a designated medical facility.
  • Ensure photos meet the specified requirements (size, background, recent).
  • Foreign residents must have a valid Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) to renew their Taiwanese driving license.
  • Professional driving licenses may have additional or different renewal requirements compared to private vehicle licenses.
