Driving licence renewal in Austria

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Landeshauptmann (Provincial Governor) / Führerscheinbehörde (Driving Licence Authority).

Renewing an Austrian driving licence (Führerschein) involves updating the document to the current EU standard format if holding an older version, or replacing an expired license. Most renewals are processed through the local driving licence authority where the applicant resides.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to initiate the renewal process at least 3 to 4 weeks before the current document expires to account for administrative processing and the production of the new physical card.

Start 21 days ahead

This accounts for the administrative processing time and the delivery of the new card via registered mail.

The process

  1. 1Verify the local responsible authority based on your place of primary residence (often the district authority or the police headquarters in statutory cities).
  2. 2Complete the application for a replacement or renewal of the driving licence.
  3. 3Submit the required documents and a current passport-style photograph to the authority.
  4. 4Pay the prescribed administrative fees.
  5. 5Collect the new licence in person or arrange for it to be delivered by registered mail.

What to bring

  • Current driving licence
  • Valid identity document (e.g., passport or national ID card)
  • One current passport photograph (conforming to specific criteria)
  • Proof of residence (Meldezettel) if requested by the local office

Who handles it

The fee is subject to change based on federal and provincial regulations; current costs should be confirmed directly with the local Führerscheinbehörde.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the passport photo meets the strict requirements for biometric identity documents.
  • Check if a medical certificate is required, especially for certain licence classes or older age brackets.
  • Be aware that different provinces may have slight variations in the submission process for applications.
