Driving licence renewal in Thailand

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Land Transport (กรมการขนส่งทางบก).

Renewing a Thai driving license generally involves preparing required documents, undergoing a physical fitness test, attending a brief training session, and submitting an application at a Department of Land Transport office.

Your timing

It is advisable for individuals to begin the renewal process several weeks or even a month before their license's expiry date. This allows ample time to secure an appointment, complete the required steps, and account for any potential processing delays or unexpected requirements.

Start 30 days ahead

This lead time accounts for potential appointment booking wait times, preparation of documents, and to ensure renewal is completed before expiry.

The process

  1. 1Gather all necessary documents, including the current driving license, national ID card, and a medical certificate.
  2. 2Obtain a medical certificate from a doctor or clinic, confirming physical fitness to drive.
  3. 3Book an appointment with a Department of Land Transport office, often possible via their online platform or by phone.
  4. 4Attend the appointment, undergo required physical fitness tests (e.g., color blindness, reaction time), and complete a short training/review session if applicable.
  5. 5Submit the application and all supporting documents to the DLT officer.
  6. 6Pay the prescribed renewal fee.
  7. 7Receive the new driving license.

What to bring

  • Original valid Thai driving license
  • Original national ID card (or valid passport and non-immigrant visa for foreigners)
  • Medical certificate (issued within a specified recent period, often one month)
  • Photocopies of all original documents (front and back of ID card, relevant passport pages)

Who handles it

The fee for driving license renewal can vary depending on the type of license (e.g., private car, motorcycle) and its validity period. Applicants should confirm the current specific fees with the Department of Land Transport, as these are subject to change.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the medical certificate is current and issued within the required timeframe before your application.
  • Book an appointment in advance, especially in busier urban areas, to avoid long waits.
  • Check for any changes in required documents or procedures directly with the Department of Land Transport, as regulations can be updated.
  • For foreign nationals, ensure all visa and residency requirements are met and documented.
