Driving licence renewal in Croatia

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministarstvo unutarnjih poslova (Ministry of Interior), Croatia.

Renewing a Croatian driving licence generally involves submitting an application at a police administration office or station, accompanied by necessary medical certificates and identification. The new licence is then produced and can be collected or delivered.

Your timing

Most people initiate the renewal process within 30 days before their driving licence's expiry date. This allows sufficient time for obtaining the required medical certificate, processing the application, and the production of the new document. Waiting until the expiry date or after may lead to a period where one cannot legally drive.

Start 30 days ahead

This timeframe accounts for scheduling a medical examination, processing the application, and the production/delivery of the new driving licence.

The process

  1. 1Obtain a medical certificate from an authorized health institution, confirming fitness to drive.
  2. 2Pay the required administrative fee for the renewal and document production.
  3. 3Gather the necessary documents, including the valid identity card, old driving licence, medical certificate, and proof of payment.
  4. 4Submit the application for renewal at a police administration office or station (policijska uprava / postaja).
  5. 5Await the production of the new driving licence. Depending on the chosen option, it may be collected in person or delivered to the registered address.

What to bring

  • Valid identity card (e.g., Croatian ID card or passport)
  • Existing driving licence (if not expired more than 6 months ago)
  • Medical certificate (Uvjerenje o zdravstvenoj sposobnosti za upravljanje vozilima) issued by an authorized health institution, not older than 6 months
  • Proof of payment of administrative fees for renewal and production of the driving licence (e.g., Uplatnica or transaction confirmation)
  • One current photograph (dimensions 3.5 x 4.5 cm), although digital photos are often taken on-site for new documents.

The cost typically includes an administrative fee (upravna pristojba) and a fee for the production of the driving licence, which can vary based on the desired speed of issuance (regular, urgent, super urgent). Specific amounts should be confirmed with the Ministry of Interior or police administration. There is also a separate fee for the medical examination.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the medical certificate is from an authorized institution and is not older than six months at the time of application.
  • If the previous driving licence has expired more than six months ago, additional conditions or procedures might apply, including potentially re-taking the driving test.
  • Verify the specific payment details and required forms with the police administration office before applying.
  • For certain categories of drivers (e.g., professional drivers), specific medical examination requirements or frequencies may apply.
