Driving licence renewal in United Arab Emirates

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) / Ministry of Interior (MoI).

Renewing a United Arab Emirates driving licence involves passing an eye test and submitting a renewal application through the relevant transport or police authority. The process is primarily digital, though some applicants may need to visit a service center depending on their specific requirements.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to initiate the renewal process at least 30 days before the expiry date to avoid potential late fines. Processing times can vary, and allowing extra time accounts for potential delays in eye test result synchronization or administrative backlogs.

Start 30 days ahead

This buffer allows for the electronic verification of eye tests and avoids late renewal penalties imposed by the authorities.

The process

  1. 1Complete an eye test at an authorized optician or eye center, which will be electronically linked to the traffic system.
  2. 2Settle any outstanding traffic fines, as these must be paid in full before a renewal can be processed.
  3. 3Log in to the official RTA portal, the RTA mobile application, or the Ministry of Interior website to select the license renewal service.
  4. 4Verify personal details and pay the required renewal fees through the digital platform.
  5. 5Request the delivery of the new physical card or opt for a digital version of the license where permitted.

What to bring

  • Existing expired or expiring driving licence
  • Electronic eye test report
  • Emirates ID card
  • Payment method for applicable fees and fines

Who handles it

Fees are set by the authorities and typically vary depending on the age of the applicant; applicants should confirm the current fee schedule directly on the RTA or MoI website at the time of renewal.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Unpaid traffic fines will prevent the renewal process from proceeding.
  • Ensure that the eye test center is officially recognized and linked to the RTA or MoI database.
  • Check the digital version of the license for accuracy before ordering a physical replacement.
