National ID card renewal in United Arab Emirates

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with الهيئة الاتحادية للهوية والجنسية والجمارك وأمن المنافذ (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security - ICP).

Renewing an Emirates ID involves submitting an application through the official portal or an authorized typing center. Once processed, the applicant may need to visit an identification center for biometric data collection if required by the authorities.

Your timing

Applicants are generally advised to initiate the renewal process at least 30 days before the current card expires. This accounts for administrative processing times and potential delays in scheduling biometric appointments.

Start 30 days ahead

Starting early avoids the imposition of late fines that may be applied by the authority after the grace period following expiration.

The process

  1. 1Log in to the official ICP portal or visit an authorized customer happiness center or typing center.
  2. 2Submit the renewal application form with updated personal information.
  3. 3Pay the applicable renewal fees as specified by the authority.
  4. 4Visit an identification center for biometrics if notified by the system.
  5. 5Track the status of the application online through the ICP website.
  6. 6Collect the new ID card once the application status indicates it is ready for delivery or pickup.

What to bring

  • Original expired or expiring Emirates ID
  • Valid passport
  • Residence visa (for expatriates)
  • Recent passport-sized photograph (if requested by the system)

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all personal information, especially name and date of birth, matches the passport exactly.
  • Check for any outstanding traffic or government fines that might block the renewal process.
  • Verify that the delivery address provided is accurate to avoid issues with courier services.
