Vehicle registration renewal in United Arab Emirates

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministry of Interior / Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Renewing a vehicle registration in the United Arab Emirates involves passing a technical vehicle inspection followed by the renewal of mandatory third-party insurance. Once these prerequisites are met, the registration can be processed and updated through official government portals or service centers.

Your timing

It is standard practice to begin the renewal process at least 30 days before the registration expires. This accounts for potential delays in inspection scheduling and ensures that any necessary vehicle maintenance can be completed without a lapse in legal coverage.

Start 30 days ahead

A 30-day buffer allows sufficient time for vehicle testing and insurance documentation to be reflected in the central electronic database.

The process

  1. 1Clear all outstanding traffic fines associated with the vehicle plate number.
  2. 2Take the vehicle to an authorized testing center to complete a technical inspection.
  3. 3Renew the vehicle's mandatory third-party insurance policy.
  4. 4Submit the renewal application through the official government portal, mobile application, or at a self-service kiosk.
  5. 5Receive the updated digital registration card or collect the physical card from an authorized location.

What to bring

  • Original Emirates ID
  • Current vehicle registration card (Mulkiya)
  • Vehicle technical inspection certificate
  • Valid insurance policy document

Who handles it

Fees vary based on the specific Emirate of registration and the vehicle type; applicants should confirm the current tariff via the RTA or relevant local transport authority website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all traffic fines are fully paid, as registration renewal is typically blocked until the balance is zero.
  • Verify that the insurance provider has electronically uploaded the policy details to the traffic system.
  • Check for any outstanding technical faults flagged during the inspection that require repairs before passing.
