Vehicle registration renewal in Sweden

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Transportstyrelsen (Swedish Transport Agency).

Vehicle registration certificates in Sweden typically do not require periodic renewal. The certificate remains valid for the vehicle as long as the ownership and vehicle details do not change. Renewal processes are usually triggered by specific events, such as changes in ownership, vehicle modifications, or when a new certificate is needed due to loss or damage.

Your timing

As vehicle registration certificates in Sweden generally do not have an expiry date, there isn't a typical 'renewal' urgency. However, if a new certificate is needed due to loss, damage, or a change in details, it is advisable to order it promptly to ensure the vehicle always has valid documentation.

Start 7 days ahead

When a new registration certificate is ordered (e.g., due to loss, damage, or change of ownership), it is typically delivered by post within a week. Processing times for specific changes may vary.

The process

  1. 1Identify the reason for needing a new registration certificate (e.g., change of ownership, loss, damage, modification).
  2. 2For changes in ownership, ensure the ownership transfer is reported to Transportstyrelsen. This is often done by filling out part 2 of the registration certificate and sending it in, or by using the digital service.
  3. 3For a lost or damaged certificate, order a new one through Transportstyrelsen's e-services or by contacting their customer service. A fee may apply.
  4. 4For vehicle modifications, ensure the changes are inspected and registered with Transportstyrelsen as required.
  5. 5Receive the new registration certificate by post.

What to bring

  • Previous registration certificate (if available and relevant for the process, e.g., part 2 for ownership transfer)
  • Identification documents for the registered owner (for certain e-services or inquiries)

Who handles it

Ordering a new registration certificate due to loss or damage typically incurs a small administrative fee, which can be confirmed on the Transportstyrelsen website. Other processes, such as vehicle inspections after modifications, may have separate costs from inspection companies.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all changes in vehicle ownership are promptly reported to Transportstyrelsen to avoid issues with taxes and responsibilities.
  • Keep both parts of the registration certificate (Part 1 and Part 2) in a safe place, but not necessarily in the vehicle, as both are crucial for various administrative tasks.
  • If ordering a new certificate, ensure the correct current address is registered with Transportstyrelsen, as it will be sent via postal mail.
