National ID card renewal in Sweden
Renewing a Swedish national ID card involves applying in person at a passport office, where the applicant's identity is verified, new photos are taken, and fingerprints are collected. The new card is then produced and can be collected later.
Most people apply for a new national ID card well in advance of its expiry date. It is advisable to begin the process several weeks before the current card expires to allow for potential appointment waiting times and processing/delivery of the new card, which typically takes about a week after the application is approved.

The process
- 1Book an appointment at a passport office (pass- och ID-expedition) via the Swedish Police website, if required by the specific office.
- 2Visit the chosen passport office in person at the scheduled time or during drop-in hours.
- 3Bring the current national ID card or another valid identification document for identity verification.
- 4Have a new photograph taken at the passport office (personal photos are not accepted).
- 5Provide fingerprints (for applicants aged 6 and above).
- 6Pay the application fee at the office.
- 7Collect the new national ID card at the same passport office when notified that it is ready.
