Vehicle registration renewal in India
Vehicle registration in India is typically valid for 15 years for a new private vehicle, after which it needs to be renewed every five years. The renewal process primarily involves a physical inspection of the vehicle to ensure its roadworthiness and compliance with emission standards.
It is generally advisable to initiate the renewal process a few weeks to a month before the expiry date. This allows sufficient time to gather all required documents, schedule and complete the vehicle inspection, and account for the processing time by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) or District Transport Office (DTO). Waiting until the last minute might lead to a lapse in registration validity, which can incur penalties.

This duration allows for vehicle inspection, document submission, and RTO processing. Specific processing times can vary.
The process
- 1Obtain Form 25 (Application for Renewal of Certificate of Registration) from the RTO website or office.
- 2Ensure the vehicle is in good working condition and arrange for a Vehicle Fitness Certificate (Form 38) from an authorized inspection center or the RTO, which involves a physical inspection of the vehicle.
- 3Gather all necessary documents, including the original Registration Certificate, insurance policy, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, proof of address, and proof of identity.
- 4Visit the designated RTO or DTO office with the vehicle for inspection, if required by the local authority, and submit the completed application form along with all supporting documents.
- 5Pay the prescribed renewal fees and any applicable taxes.
- 6Collect the renewed Registration Certificate or smart card once processed by the RTO.
