Work permit renewal in India

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) / Foreigners Registration Office (FRO), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

Renewing a work permit in India for foreign nationals primarily involves extending the Employment Visa (E-Visa), which is granted to individuals coming to India for employment. The process typically requires applying to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) for an extension of stay and visa.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to initiate the renewal process well in advance of the current visa's expiration date, often around 60 days prior. This allows sufficient time for processing and to address any potential delays or requests for additional documentation, ensuring continuous legal residency and employment status.

Start 60 days ahead

To allow for application submission, processing time, and potential requests for additional information, it is recommended to start the renewal process approximately two months before the current visa expires.

The process

  1. 1Verify eligibility for visa extension based on the applicant's current employment contract and visa type.
  2. 2Gather all required documents, including the application form, current visa and passport, employment contract, company letters, and proof of address.
  3. 3Complete the online application for 'Extension of Stay / Visa' on the Indian e-FRRO portal.
  4. 4Upload all necessary documents as part of the online application.
  5. 5Schedule an appointment, if required, or wait for communication from the FRRO/FRO regarding further steps or an interview.
  6. 6Attend any scheduled interview or provide additional documents as requested by the FRRO/FRO.
  7. 7Pay any applicable visa extension fees online or at the FRRO/FRO office.
  8. 8Collect the renewed visa/extension of stay endorsement once approved.

What to bring

The fee for an Employment Visa extension can vary based on nationality and duration. Specific fees should be confirmed on the e-FRRO portal during the application process or with the relevant FRRO/FRO office.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all documentation, especially employer letters and contracts, clearly states the need for employment in India and the duration.
  • Incomplete applications or missing documents can lead to delays or rejection, so double-check all requirements before submission.
  • The e-FRRO portal is the primary channel for most applications; ensure familiarity with its interface and requirements.
  • Rules and required documents can sometimes be updated; always refer to the latest guidelines on the official FRRO website before applying.
