Passport renewal in India
Renewing an Indian passport typically involves applying online through the Passport Seva system, submitting required documents, and attending an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). The process updates the passport holder's details and extends validity for another 10 years, or 5 years for minors.
It is generally advisable to apply for passport renewal well in advance of its expiry, often around one year before, to avoid any last-minute issues. This allows ample time for appointment scheduling, processing, and potential unforeseen delays, especially for those planning international travel.
Start 60 days ahead
This lead time accounts for time needed to prepare documents, schedule appointments (which can have waiting periods), and the standard processing time for the application. Tatkaal (expedited) services are available for urgent cases at an additional fee.
The process
- 1Register and create an account on the Passport Seva Online Portal.
- 2Log in to the portal and select 'Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport'.
- 3Fill out the online application form with accurate details.
- 4Pay the applicable fees online. This allows for scheduling an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
- 5Print the application receipt which includes the Application Reference Number (ARN).
- 6Visit the designated PSK/POPSK on the scheduled date and time with original documents and photocopies. Biometrics will be collected and documents verified.
- 7Track the application status online and await dispatch of the new passport.

- Old Passport in original (with self-attested photocopies of the first two and last two pages)
- Proof of Address (e.g., Aadhaar card, electricity bill, bank passbook)
- Proof of Date of Birth (e.g., birth certificate, Aadhaar card, matriculation certificate)
- Documentary evidence for any change in name, address, or other particulars (if applicable)
- Passport-size photographs (though often taken at the PSK, it's advisable to carry a couple)
