Vehicle registration renewal in Malaysia

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) Malaysia (Road Transport Department Malaysia).

Renewing a vehicle registration in Malaysia typically involves ensuring the vehicle has valid insurance and a valid road tax. The road tax renewal is processed by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) after insurance is secured, and for older or commercial vehicles, a vehicle inspection may also be required.

Your timing

It is advisable to start the renewal process a few weeks before the expiry date to allow ample time for obtaining vehicle insurance, scheduling any necessary vehicle inspections, and processing the road tax renewal. This helps avoid potential penalties for driving with expired documents and ensures continuous legal operation of the vehicle.

Start 21 days ahead

This lead time allows for obtaining insurance quotes, purchasing a policy, booking and completing a vehicle inspection (if required), and submitting the road tax renewal application. Processing times can vary depending on the chosen method (online, counter service, or agent).

The process

  1. 1Ensure the vehicle has valid motor insurance coverage. This is a prerequisite for road tax renewal.
  2. 2For certain categories of vehicles (e.g., commercial vehicles, vehicles over a certain age, or those undergoing specific transactions), obtain a Puspakom vehicle inspection certificate if required by JPJ regulations.
  3. 3Prepare the necessary documents, including the original vehicle registration certificate (VOC/V5C) or vehicle ownership certificate (COE), and proof of valid insurance.
  4. 4Renew the road tax through one of the available channels: online via MyJPJ portal or MyEG, at a JPJ counter, or through post offices or authorized JPJ agents.
  5. 5Pay the applicable road tax fee.
  6. 6Receive the renewed road tax sticker or digital confirmation, and display the sticker prominently on the vehicle's windshield if applicable.

What to bring

  • Original Vehicle Registration Certificate (VOC/V5C) or Vehicle Ownership Certificate (COE)
  • Proof of valid motor insurance (e.g., insurance policy cover note)
  • Puspakom inspection certificate (if applicable, typically for commercial vehicles or older private vehicles)
  • Identification document (for owner or authorized representative)

The cost of road tax varies significantly based on vehicle type (e.g., car, motorcycle), engine capacity, and ownership type (private, commercial). Insurance premiums also depend on various factors like vehicle value, engine capacity, driver profile, and coverage type. Vehicle inspection fees are set by Puspakom. It is necessary to confirm the exact fees with the relevant authorities or service providers.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Driving with expired road tax or insurance can result in penalties.
  • Ensure your vehicle insurance is valid before attempting to renew road tax, as it is a mandatory prerequisite.
  • Check if your vehicle requires a Puspakom inspection, especially for older private vehicles, commercial vehicles, or certain types of transactions, as failing to do so will prevent road tax renewal.
  • Be aware of the different renewal channels (online, JPJ counters, post offices, agents) and their respective processing times and convenience fees.
