Vehicle registration renewal in Ireland

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Transport (via Motor Tax Online and local motor tax offices).

In Ireland, vehicle registration itself does not expire and does not require renewal in the same way as a driver's licence. The main recurring obligation for vehicle owners is the renewal of motor tax, which is typically paid annually, biannually, or quarterly.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to renew motor tax before the previous period expires to avoid penalties. Motorists can typically apply for renewal up to ten days before the current tax disc's expiration date. This allows sufficient time for processing and delivery of the new tax disc.

Start 10 days ahead

This lead time is recommended for online applications to ensure the new tax disc arrives before the old one expires, accounting for potential processing and postal delays.

The process

  1. 1Determine the expiry date of the current motor tax.
  2. 2Gather the necessary vehicle details, such as the vehicle registration number and the PIN from the renewal reminder or vehicle registration certificate.
  3. 3Access the official Motor Tax Online service or visit a local motor tax office.
  4. 4Select the desired tax period (3, 6, or 12 months).
  5. 5Pay the applicable motor tax fee.
  6. 6Receive the new motor tax disc, which should be displayed on the vehicle.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration number
  • PIN from the motor tax renewal reminder (RF100B) or the vehicle registration certificate (VRC)
  • Method of payment (credit/debit card for online, various options for in-person)

The cost of motor tax varies significantly based on vehicle type, engine size, and CO2 emissions (for vehicles registered after a certain date). Current fee schedules are available on the official Motor Tax Online website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Driving without current motor tax is illegal and can result in fines or prosecution.
  • If the vehicle has recently been imported or changed ownership, additional documentation may be required for the first taxing.
  • For vehicles over a certain age, a valid Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW) is required to tax the vehicle; ensure the CRW is current.
  • Loss or non-receipt of a renewal reminder (RF100B) does not exempt a vehicle owner from renewing motor tax; the PIN can often be found on the Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC).
