Driving licence renewal in Romania

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Direcția Regim Permise de Conducere și Înmatriculare a Vehiculelor (DRPCIV) - Directorate for Driving Licences and Vehicle Registration.

Renewing a Romanian driving license generally involves undergoing a medical examination, gathering necessary documents, and submitting an application to the relevant public services for driver registration and vehicle registration.

Your timing

It is advisable for individuals to begin the renewal process several weeks to a few months before their current driving license expires. This allows ample time to schedule and complete the required medical examination, gather all necessary documents, and account for potential waiting times for appointments or processing at the public services office.

Start 60 days ahead

This lead time accounts for booking a medical examination, gathering documents, and potential processing times at the DRPCIV offices. While processing itself may be quicker, securing all prerequisites can take time.

The process

  1. 1Undergo a mandatory medical examination to assess physical and mental fitness to drive, obtaining a medical certificate from an authorized medical unit.
  2. 2Pay the applicable driving license renewal fee.
  3. 3Gather all required documents, including the valid identity card, current driving license, medical certificate, and proof of fee payment.
  4. 4Present the gathered documents and the application form (usually completed on site) at the counter of the Public Community Service for Driving Licenses and Vehicle Registration (SPCRPCIV) in the county of residence.
  5. 5Submit biometric data (photo and signature) at the SPCRPCIV office.
  6. 6Receive confirmation or a temporary driving certificate, if applicable, and await notification for collection of the new driving license.

What to bring

  • Valid identity card (carte de identitate) in original and copy
  • Current Romanian driving license (permis de conducere) in original
  • Medical certificate (fișă medicală) issued by an authorized medical unit, confirming fitness to drive
  • Proof of payment of the driving license fee
  • Application form (available at the SPCRPCIV office or for download, if applicable)

The fee for issuing a new driving license is generally 89 RON. There are separate costs for the medical examination, which vary depending on the medical unit chosen.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the medical certificate is issued by a medical unit authorized to conduct examinations for driving license purposes.
  • Confirm the specific payment methods and details for the driving license fee, as these may vary or require online payment beforehand.
  • Check the operating hours and any appointment booking requirements for the local SPCRPCIV office.
  • Verify the validity period of the medical certificate, as it typically has a limited duration from its issue date.
