Vehicle inspection renewal in Romania

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Registrul Auto Român (Romanian Auto Registry) and authorized ITP stations..

Renewing a vehicle inspection in Romania involves taking the vehicle to an authorized station for a periodic technical inspection (ITP). The inspection assesses the vehicle's roadworthiness, safety, and environmental compliance.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to schedule a vehicle inspection a few weeks before its expiration date. This allows time to address any potential issues identified during the inspection or to reschedule if necessary, ensuring continuous legal operation of the vehicle.

Start 14 days ahead

This accounts for potential appointment waiting times at authorized ITP stations, especially during peak periods.

The process

  1. 1Check the validity period of the current vehicle inspection (ITP) to determine the renewal deadline.
  2. 2Locate an authorized ITP station. These are usually certified by the Registrul Auto Român (RAR).
  3. 3Schedule an appointment for the inspection. This can often be done online or by phone.
  4. 4Prepare the vehicle for inspection, ensuring it is clean and that all required documents are readily available.
  5. 5Attend the appointment with the vehicle and all necessary documents. The inspection will assess various aspects of the vehicle's condition.
  6. 6If the vehicle passes the inspection, the ITP will be renewed, and a new sticker and stamp will be applied to the vehicle's registration certificate.
  7. 7If the vehicle fails, address the identified deficiencies and re-present the vehicle for a re-inspection within a specified timeframe.

What to bring

  • Original Vehicle Registration Certificate (Certificat de înmatriculare)
  • Identity document of the vehicle owner or driver
  • Valid civil liability insurance policy (RCA - Asigurare de Răspundere Civilă Auto)

Who handles it

Registrul Auto Român (Romanian Auto Registry) and authorized ITP stations.

The cost of an ITP varies depending on the type of vehicle (e.g., car, motorcycle, truck) and the authorized inspection station. It is recommended to confirm the current fee directly with the chosen ITP station.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Expired ITP: Operating a vehicle with an expired ITP is illegal and can result in fines and impoundment of the vehicle's registration certificate.
  • Vehicle Condition: Ensure the vehicle is in good working order, especially regarding brakes, lights, tires, and emissions, as these are common reasons for failing an ITP.
  • Document Validity: Confirm that all required documents, such as the insurance policy, are valid and original.
  • Appointment Availability: ITP stations can be busy, so booking an appointment in advance is advisable to avoid last-minute stress.
