Vehicle inspection renewal in New Zealand

Vehicle inspections in New Zealand, commonly known as a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) or Certificate of Fitness (CoF), ensure a vehicle meets safety standards. Renewal involves taking the vehicle to an approved inspection agent for a check against these standards. If the vehicle passes, a new WoF or CoF is issued.

Your timing

Most vehicles require a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) annually once they are older than six years. Newer vehicles (registered after 1 January 2000) have their first WoF valid for three years, then annually. Commercial or passenger service vehicles require a Certificate of Fitness (CoF) more frequently, often every six months. It is advisable to schedule an inspection appointment a few weeks before the current inspection expires, especially during peak times, to allow time for any necessary repairs if the vehicle fails the initial inspection.

This allows for booking an appointment, potential repairs if the vehicle fails the initial inspection, and re-inspection before the current WoF/CoF expires.

The process

  1. 1Check the expiry date on the current Warrant of Fitness (WoF) or Certificate of Fitness (CoF) label, usually found on the windscreen.
  2. 2Locate an approved WoF or CoF inspection agent. These are often garages, service stations, or dedicated inspection centres.
  3. 3Book an appointment for the inspection. Some inspection centres allow walk-ins, but booking is recommended.
  4. 4Take the vehicle to the inspection agent at the scheduled time. No specific documents are usually required for the inspection itself, as the vehicle's details are accessed electronically.
  5. 5Pay the inspection fee to the agent.
  6. 6If the vehicle passes the inspection, a new WoF or CoF label will be issued and affixed to the vehicle. The inspection details are also recorded electronically.
  7. 7If the vehicle fails, the inspection agent will provide a list of defects that need to be repaired. The vehicle must then be repaired and re-inspected. A free re-inspection is often provided if returned to the same agent within a specified timeframe (e.g., 28 days) and only the failed items need to be rechecked.

The cost of a Warrant of Fitness or Certificate of Fitness inspection is set by individual inspection providers, not by Waka Kotahi. Prices can vary significantly between different inspection stations. It is advisable to check with the chosen inspection agent for their current fee.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the chosen inspection agent is an approved WoF/CoF inspection provider.
  • Be aware that if a vehicle fails inspection, any necessary repairs must be completed before a new WoF/CoF can be issued. Driving a vehicle with an expired WoF/CoF or known defects can result in fines.
  • Check all basic items like lights, tyres, seatbelts, and wipers before the inspection to increase the likelihood of passing the first time.
