Passport renewal in New Zealand

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Internal Affairs (Te Tari Taiwhenua).

Renewing a New Zealand passport typically involves applying online or by mail, providing a compliant photo, and paying the required fee. The process is managed by the Department of Internal Affairs.

Your timing

Most people apply for a new passport several months before their current one expires, especially if they have upcoming international travel plans. It is generally recommended to have at least six months of validity remaining on a passport for international travel. Processing times can vary, so starting the application well in advance allows for any potential delays.

Start 10 days ahead

This is the standard processing time for adult passport applications received in New Zealand. Additional time should be factored in for delivery and if applying from outside New Zealand. Urgent applications may be processed faster for an additional fee.

The process

  1. 1Check eligibility for renewal, which applies if the previous passport expired less than 3 years ago or is still current, and the applicant is 16 years or older.
  2. 2Gather necessary documentation, including the current or expired passport.
  3. 3Obtain a compliant digital passport photo, which can be done by a professional photographer or through an online photo service.
  4. 4Complete the online application form on the official New Zealand Passports website.
  5. 5Pay the application fee using a credit or debit card.
  6. 6Submit the application electronically and await processing.

What to bring

  • Your most recent New Zealand passport (even if expired)
  • A compliant digital passport photo

As of late 2023, the standard fee for an adult New Zealand passport applied for online in New Zealand is NZD $206. Costs vary for urgent processing, overseas applications, or applications by mail. It is advisable to confirm the current fees on the official New Zealand Passports website before applying.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure your digital passport photo meets all specific requirements, as incorrect photos are a common reason for application delays.
  • Allow sufficient time for processing, especially if you have upcoming travel, as standard processing times do not include delivery.
  • If applying from outside New Zealand, be aware that processing times and fees may differ, and additional documentation might be required.
  • Make sure your previous passport was not lost, stolen, or damaged, as a different application process might apply in those cases.
