Vehicle relicensing in New Zealand involves paying a fee to the NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) to keep a vehicle legally registered for use on public roads. This process is typically annual or six-monthly.

Your timing

Most people receive a reminder notice before their vehicle's license expires. It is advisable to relicense the vehicle in advance of the expiry date to avoid late fees or being unable to legally drive the vehicle.

Relicensing can often be completed instantly online or at an agent. However, allowing a day or two before the expiry date provides a buffer in case of any technical issues or if an in-person visit is required.

The process

  1. 1Receive a relicensing reminder notice from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, usually by post or email.
  2. 2Check if the vehicle requires a current Warrant of Fitness (WoF) or Certificate of Fitness (CoF). Relicensing cannot be completed without a current WoF/CoF.
  3. 3Choose a relicensing method: online, by post, or in person at a Waka Kotahi agent (e.g., NZ Post, AA, Vehicle Testing New Zealand).
  4. 4Provide the vehicle's plate number and the unique reference number from the reminder notice (if available).
  5. 5Select the relicensing period (6 or 12 months) and pay the applicable fee.
  6. 6Receive confirmation of relicensing and a new licence label to display on the vehicle's windscreen.
