Renewing a Macao SAR driving licence typically involves applying to the Transport Bureau (DSAT) with the necessary identification and documents, and may include a medical examination depending on the applicant's age.

Your timing

It is advisable to initiate the renewal process well in advance of the expiry date to account for potential processing times and appointment availability, if applicable. Some sources suggest applying within the six months prior to expiry, and extensions are possible for those overseas or in special circumstances.

Start 180 days ahead

This period allows for renewal up to six months before the expiry date, providing ample time for processing and any required medical examinations.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiry date of the current driving licence.
  2. 2If required, obtain a medical examination certificate from a registered doctor, particularly for applicants aged 65 or above.
  3. 3Prepare all necessary documents, including the original Macao SAR Resident ID Card or valid passport/travel document, the existing driving licence, and the medical examination certificate (if applicable).
  4. 4Submit the application in person at a DSAT service centre, or apply online if eligible.
  5. 5Pay the applicable renewal fee.
  6. 6Collect the new driving licence once processed, either in person or via registered mail.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Applicants aged 65 or above must provide a medical examination certificate, which has specific validity periods (e.g., one year for those 65-69, six months for those 70 and above).
