Passport renewal in Macao

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Identification Services Bureau (DSI) (身份證明局).

Renewing a Macao SAR passport typically involves submitting an application either in person at the Identification Services Bureau (DSI) or through self-service kiosks, providing necessary documents, and paying the applicable fee. The new passport will feature updated personal information and a new validity period.

Your timing

It is advisable to initiate the renewal process several months before a passport's expiry date. This allows sufficient time for processing and potential appointment waiting times, ensuring there is no interruption to travel plans or other activities requiring a valid passport.

Start 15 days ahead

This is the stated processing time for a regular application from the Identification Services Bureau (DSI). Urgent services are available at an additional cost.

The process

  1. 1Prepare required documents, including the current Macao SAR passport, Macao SAR Resident Identity Card, and a qualified passport photograph.
  2. 2Choose an application method: either apply in person at the Identification Services Bureau (DSI) or use a self-service kiosk if eligible.
  3. 3Submit the application and all supporting documents.
  4. 4Pay the application fee.
  5. 5Collect the new Macao SAR passport upon notification, typically within the stated processing time.

What to bring

  • Macao SAR Resident Identity Card (original)
  • Current Macao SAR Passport (original)
  • A qualified passport photograph (taken within the last six months, meeting specific requirements). Alternatively, applicants can use the self-service photography facility at the DSI or submit a digital photo. Specific requirements for photos can be found on the DSI website.
  • For applicants under 18 years old, an additional consent form from parents or legal guardians, along with their identification documents, is required.
  • If information has changed (e.g., name, marital status), relevant supporting documents like a marriage certificate or change of name certificate may be needed.

Who handles it

As of the information available on the DSI website, the fee for a Macao SAR Passport (valid for 10 years) is MOP430. An additional MOP100 is charged for urgent processing (valid for 5 working days), and MOP250 for extra urgent processing (valid for 2 working days). Fees may vary for specific circumstances (e.g., damaged passport, lost passport).

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the passport photograph meets the specified requirements; improperly taken photos are a common reason for application delays.
  • Verify whether all personal information on record is up-to-date. Any changes might require additional supporting documents.
  • For urgent travel needs, consider the express processing options, but be aware of the additional fees.
  • Collection of the new passport generally requires the applicant to bring their original receipt and current Macao SAR Resident Identity Card.
