Driving licence renewal in Switzerland

How to renew a driving licence — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Strassenverkehrsamt / Office de la circulation routière (Cantonal Vehicle Licensing Authority).

Renewing a Swiss driving licence involves converting the older paper-based format into the current credit-card-style licence. This process is generally straightforward and managed by the cantonal vehicle licensing authority where the holder resides.

Your timing

It is recommended to initiate the process several weeks before any planned international travel, as the new format is the standard requirement for driving outside of Switzerland and is often requested by car rental agencies.

Start 14 days ahead

Processing times vary by canton, but a lead time of two weeks allows for document submission and mailing of the new card.

The process

  1. 1Identify the website of the cantonal road traffic office in the canton of residence.
  2. 2Download the application form for the exchange of a paper licence for a credit-card-style licence.
  3. 3Obtain a recent passport-sized photograph that meets official criteria.
  4. 4Complete the application form and attach the required photograph.
  5. 5Submit the application and the original paper licence to the cantonal authority via post or in person as instructed by the specific canton.
  6. 6Receive the new credit-card-style licence via post.

What to bring

  • Completed application form
  • Current paper driving licence
  • One recent passport photograph
  • Official identification document (if requested by the canton)

Fees vary by canton, typically ranging between 30 and 60 CHF; check the specific cantonal road traffic office website for current pricing.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the passport photo adheres strictly to the identity document guidelines required by Swiss authorities.
  • Do not wait until the last minute if the current paper licence is significantly worn or damaged, as this may require additional verification.
  • Check if the canton requires an in-person appearance to verify identity before issuing the new card.
