Health insurance renewal in Switzerland

How to renew health insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Bundesamt für Gesundheit (BAG) / Office fédéral de la santé publique (OFSP).

Renewing health insurance in Switzerland involves confirming your plan for the upcoming year and making any desired adjustments to your deductible or insurance model. Because basic health insurance is mandatory for all residents, coverage remains active automatically unless the policyholder actively switches providers during the designated window.

Your timing

Most residents review their coverage during October and November. This is because health insurance providers are required to announce premiums for the following year by late autumn, and policyholders have until the end of November to submit a cancellation notice if they wish to change insurers.

Start 30 days ahead

A minimum of one month is recommended to compare premiums and finalize administrative changes before the annual deadline.

The process

  1. 1Review the new premium rates for the upcoming year published by the Federal Office of Public Health.
  2. 2Compare available insurance models and providers using the official comparison tool.
  3. 3Decide whether to maintain current coverage or request a change of insurer or deductible level.
  4. 4If switching insurers, send a written cancellation notice via registered mail to the current provider before the end of November.
  5. 5Receive confirmation of the new policy or acknowledgement of the adjusted terms from the insurance provider.

What to bring

  • Current insurance policy document
  • Personal identification (passport or Swiss residence permit)
  • Written cancellation notice (if changing insurers)

Monthly premiums vary significantly by canton, insurance provider, and chosen deductible; specific rates should be confirmed via the official priminfo.admin.ch portal.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Missing the November 30 cancellation deadline, which locks the current policy in for another full calendar year.
  • Failing to send cancellations via registered mail, which may result in a lack of proof of receipt.
  • Underestimating the impact of deductible changes on monthly premium costs.
