How to renew health insurance
Health insurance renewal is usually automatic, which is exactly the problem. In several countries there is a short annual window in which you may change insurer at all, and missing it locks you in for another year.
The switching window
Where insurance is mandatory, the right to switch is often restricted to a few weeks a year — commonly late in the calendar year, with cover changing on 1 January. Outside that window you generally cannot move regardless of price.
Premiums for the following year are usually published shortly before the window opens, which leaves a narrow period to compare and decide.
When the policy has to satisfy a visa or permit
If your residence permit or visa required proof of cover, the renewal has to keep meeting that requirement — often a minimum benefit level, a minimum duration, and cover valid in the specific country.
Cheaper policies frequently fail those tests on a technicality such as repatriation cover or a deductible ceiling. Check the requirement, not just the price, before switching.
If you live outside your home country
Domestic policies often stop covering you once you are resident elsewhere, sometimes without saying so clearly. International or expatriate cover is a different product priced differently.
Where a home-country public scheme continues to cover you abroad, it is usually limited to emergencies and to specific countries, and it is rarely enough to satisfy a residence requirement on its own.
The rules depend on the country
Everything above holds broadly. The authority, the fee, the forms and the lead time do not. Pick where the document was issued.

Questions
What happens if I miss the switching window?
Your existing policy typically renews automatically at the new price and you wait until the next window. Some countries make exceptions when your premium rises or your circumstances change substantially.
Does a gap in cover matter if I am healthy?
Yes, in two ways. Where cover is mandatory, a gap can carry a penalty and back-payment. And where a permit requires it, a gap is a breach of the permit condition, which is the more serious of the two.
