Health insurance renewal in Colombia

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministerio de Salud y Protección Social (Ministry of Health and Social Protection).

Renewing health insurance in Colombia, known as the Entidad Promotora de Salud (EPS), involves updating the contributor's employment or independent status and verifying current coverage status through the national database. The process ensures continuous access to medical services within the Sistema General de Seguridad Social en Salud.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to verify coverage status at least 30 days before a period of transition or contract change. High demand for administrative processing at EPS offices can lead to wait times, so early verification is advised.

Start 30 days ahead

Early initiation helps account for potential delays in payroll processing or changes in contribution status that may affect the validation of coverage in the ADRES database.

The process

  1. 1Verify current affiliation status via the ADRES (Administradora de los Recursos del Sistema General de Seguridad Social en Salud) portal.
  2. 2Submit required documentation regarding employment status or independent income to the chosen EPS provider.
  3. 3Ensure contribution payments (Planilla Integrada de Liquidación de Aportes - PILA) are up to date.
  4. 4Request an updated certificate of affiliation (Certificado de Afiliación) from the EPS provider if required by external entities.

What to bring

  • Valid identification (Cédula de Ciudadanía or Cédula de Extranjería)
  • PILA payment vouchers (Planilla Integrada de Liquidación de Aportes)
  • Income certification or employment contract for independent contributors

Who handles it

Contributions are typically a percentage of monthly income (usually 12.5%, split between employer and employee, or paid fully by independent contributors). Verify the current contribution base and rates directly with the EPS provider.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Discrepancies in the ADRES database can lead to temporary suspension of services.
  • Failure to pay the PILA on time results in a lapse of coverage for the following month.
  • Ensure that personal details in the EPS records exactly match those on the national identification card.
