Motor insurance renewal in Colombia

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministerio de Transporte (Ministry of Transport) / Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia (Financial Superintendence of Colombia).

Renewing motor insurance in Colombia, commonly known as SOAT (Seguro Obligatorio de Accidentes de Tránsito), involves purchasing a new electronic policy through authorized providers. The insurance is mandatory for all vehicles circulating within the country to cover medical expenses for people injured in traffic accidents.

Your timing

It is standard practice to renew policies at least 24 to 48 hours before the current document expires. Because digital processing is generally immediate, starting a few days early ensures that the updated policy is correctly registered in the national traffic database (RUNT) before the existing coverage lapses.

Start 2 days ahead

While issuance is often instantaneous, allowing time for the information to sync with the RUNT database prevents potential issues with traffic authorities.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiration date of the current policy through the RUNT platform.
  2. 2Select an authorized insurance company or an approved digital platform to purchase the new policy.
  3. 3Enter the vehicle's license plate number and document details to generate the quote.
  4. 4Complete the payment through the provider's official online portal or at an authorized physical collection point.
  5. 5Download the electronic SOAT policy once it is issued and verify that the data appears correctly in the RUNT system.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration card (Licencia de Tránsito)
  • Identification document of the policyholder
  • Current policy number (for verification purposes)

Who handles it

Ministerio de Transporte (Ministry of Transport) / Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia (Financial Superintendence of Colombia)

The cost of SOAT is determined by the vehicle category, engine capacity, and age, and is updated annually by the national government; it is recommended to confirm the exact current rate directly on the official website of the chosen insurance provider.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the insurance provider is officially authorized by the Superintendencia Financiera to avoid fraudulent websites.
  • Verify that the license plate number is entered exactly as it appears on the vehicle registration card to prevent synchronization errors with the RUNT database.
  • Always confirm that the updated information has successfully migrated to the national RUNT database after the purchase is finalized.
