Health insurance renewal in Germany

How to renew health insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung (Statutory Health Insurance) / Private Krankenversicherung (Private Health Insurance).

Renewing statutory health insurance in Germany is generally an automatic process, as coverage continues indefinitely as long as the policyholder remains eligible. Individuals with private health insurance or those undergoing changes in employment status may need to update their contract details directly with their provider.

Your timing

Most statutory insurance renewals require no action, but individuals changing employment, moving abroad, or switching providers should initiate contact at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance to ensure continuous coverage and avoid gaps in service.

Start 30 days ahead

Administrative processing for updates to membership status or provider changes typically requires several weeks to account for data verification.

The process

  1. 1Verify the current insurance status with the health insurance provider (Krankenkasse).
  2. 2Notify the provider of any changes in professional or personal circumstances, such as a change in employer or address.
  3. 3Submit any required forms provided by the health insurance fund to confirm updated details.
  4. 4Wait for the issuance of a new electronic health card (eGK) if the insurance provider or membership status has changed.
  5. 5Confirm that the employer has received notification of the current insurance status.

What to bring

  • Current health insurance card
  • Social security number
  • Proof of employment or income (if applicable)
  • Valid identification document (e.g., passport or national ID)

Who handles it

Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung (Statutory Health Insurance) / Private Krankenversicherung (Private Health Insurance)

Statutory insurance premiums are calculated as a percentage of gross income; confirm current contribution rates directly with the specific health insurance fund.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to notify the insurer of a change in employment can lead to administrative delays in contribution payments.
  • Ensure the insurance provider has the current residential address to prevent missed correspondence regarding membership.
  • Statutory coverage generally does not expire, so be wary of unsolicited offers or websites suggesting that a mandatory 'renewal' is required for standard coverage.
