Vehicle registration renewal in Germany

How to renew vehicle registration — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Kraftfahrzeug-Zulassungsstelle (Vehicle Registration Office).

Renewing a vehicle registration in Germany (Kfz-Zulassung) involves updating the vehicle's status with the local registration office. This process is typically required when there is a change in ownership, a change of residence, or if a temporary registration needs to be extended.

Your timing

It is advisable to initiate registration processes at least 2–4 weeks in advance, as appointment availability at municipal offices (Kfz-Zulassungsstelle) can be limited. Processing times vary by district, and some administrative offices require appointments for all in-person transactions.

Start 21 days ahead

The process

  1. 1Verify the specific requirements of the local Zulassungsstelle responsible for your primary place of residence.
  2. 2Schedule an appointment online or by telephone if the local office requires it.
  3. 3Ensure the vehicle has valid insurance (eVB-Nummer) and a current inspection report (Hauptuntersuchung/TÜV) if applicable.
  4. 4Submit the required documents, including the Zulassungsbescheinigung Part I and Part II, to the registration office.
  5. 5Pay the applicable administrative fees.
  6. 6Receive the updated registration documents and, if necessary, update the validity stickers on the license plates.

What to bring

  • Zulassungsbescheinigung Part I (Vehicle Registration Certificate)
  • Zulassungsbescheinigung Part II (Vehicle Title)
  • Proof of valid liability insurance (eVB-Nummer)
  • Valid identity document (Personalausweis or Passport)
  • Report from the latest main inspection (TÜV-Bericht)
  • SEPA direct debit mandate for vehicle tax payment

Fees vary significantly by municipality and the specific type of registration service; confirm current rates directly with your local authority's fee schedule.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to provide a valid, current SEPA mandate for vehicle tax collection often causes immediate rejection of the application.
  • Expired inspection reports (Hauptuntersuchung) must be renewed before a registration can be processed.
  • Ensuring all previously issued registration documents are presented in their original form is essential to avoid additional processing delays.
