Residence permit renewal in Germany

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Örtliche Ausländerbehörde (local foreigners authority) responsible for the applicant's registered main residence. Rules here vary, so check carefully.

Renewing a German temporary residence permit generally means applying to the local foreigners authority before the permit expires and showing that its original conditions remain satisfied. If only the electronic card for a permanent residence status is expiring, the process is usually a card replacement rather than an extension of the underlying status.

Your timing

Applicants commonly start 8 to 12 weeks in advance because appointment availability, document checks and production of the electronic residence permit can take several weeks. The extension application should reach the responsible authority before the current permit expires.

Start 90 days ahead

This allows time for local appointment queues, requests for additional evidence and production of a new electronic residence permit; local procedures and processing times vary.

The process

  1. 1Identify whether the underlying temporary residence permit is expiring or whether only an electronic card for permanent residence status needs replacement.
  2. 2Consult the responsible local Ausländerbehörde's checklist and submit its online or paper extension application before the current permit expires.
  3. 3Provide a valid passport, the current electronic residence permit and evidence that the requirements for the residence purpose continue to be met.
  4. 4Attend an appointment if required, provide an authority-compliant biometric photograph and complete any identity or fingerprint procedures.
  5. 5Pay the applicable fee or provide evidence supporting a fee reduction or exemption.
  6. 6Keep any issued Fiktionsbescheinigung and collect the new electronic residence permit when notified.

What to bring

  • Valid passport
  • Current electronic residence permit and any supplementary sheet
  • Completed local application or online application confirmation
  • Current authority-compliant biometric photograph, using the submission method accepted locally
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Proof of sufficient income or other financial resources
  • Proof connected to the residence purpose, such as an employment contract and recent payslips, university enrollment, vocational-training documents or family relationship evidence
  • Proof of registered address or housing if required by the local authority
  • Any additional documents listed by the responsible Ausländerbehörde

Who handles it

Örtliche Ausländerbehörde (local foreigners authority) responsible for the applicant's registered main residence

Section 45 of the federal Residence Ordinance lists €96 for extending a covered temporary residence title by up to three months and €93 for an extension exceeding three months. Different rules, reductions or exemptions can apply depending on the title and applicant category, so the current amount should be confirmed with the local Ausländerbehörde.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Submitting after expiry may mean the previous title does not automatically continue; a timely application generally triggers continued validity under Section 81(4) of the Residence Act.
  • An expiring electronic card does not always mean permanent residence status itself is expiring.
  • A new permit may be limited by the passport's validity, so an expiring passport can shorten or delay the process.
  • A pending application or Fiktionsbescheinigung can affect international travel and re-entry differently depending on its legal basis; travel conditions should be confirmed before departure.
