Residence permit renewal in Netherlands

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst (IND) / Immigration and Naturalisation Service.

Renewing a Dutch residence permit generally involves checking eligibility, submitting an application to the Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst (IND) through their online portal or by post, and then picking up the new permit once it's approved.

Your timing

Most people should begin the renewal process approximately three months before their current permit's expiry date. This allows sufficient time for the IND to process the application, which can take several weeks, and accounts for potential appointment waiting times for biometric data or permit collection.

Start 90 days ahead

This lead time is recommended because the IND advises applying at least 3 months (90 days) before the current permit expires to ensure continuity and account for processing times, which can be up to 8 weeks for certain applications.

The process

  1. 1Check if the conditions for the current residence permit still apply and if renewal is possible. This often depends on the type of permit and individual circumstances.
  2. 2Gather all necessary documents, which may include a valid passport, income statements, and a completed application form.
  3. 3Submit the renewal application online via the IND website or by post, depending on the type of residence permit and whether the application is for an extension or a change of purpose.
  4. 4Pay the application fee as instructed by the IND.
  5. 5If required, attend an appointment for biometrics (fingerprints, photo) at an IND desk.
  6. 6Await the IND's decision. This process can take several weeks.
  7. 7Once the permit is approved and produced, schedule an appointment to collect the new residence permit at an IND desk.

What to bring

  • Valid passport or other travel document
  • Current residence permit (for reference, though it remains valid until expiry or decision)
  • Proof of sufficient income (e.g., employment contract, salary slips, bank statements), often needing to meet specific income thresholds
  • Completed application form (if applying by post, or details entered online)
  • Any additional documents specific to the type of residence permit being renewed (e.g., proof of study, marriage certificate, proof of partnership)

The application fees for residence permit renewals vary significantly depending on the type of permit (e.g., highly skilled migrant, family reunification, study) and the applicant's age. The IND publishes a detailed overview of current fees on its website, which should be consulted for the specific amount. Fees are typically paid during the application process.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all conditions for the residence permit continue to be met, especially regarding income requirements, as failure to do so can lead to rejection.
  • Apply well in advance of the expiry date. Late applications may lead to a gap in legal residency, or require applying for a new permit rather than a renewal.
  • Provide complete and accurate documentation. Incomplete applications will cause delays or rejection.
  • Keep track of the application's status through the IND's online portal or by contacting them directly if the processing time exceeds the expected duration.
