Residence permit renewal in Denmark

How to renew a residence permit — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Styrelsen for International Rekruttering og Integration (SIRI - Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration).

Renewing a Danish residence permit involves submitting an application to the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) or the Danish Immigration Service. Applicants must confirm their eligibility for an extension based on their specific permit category before their current permit expires.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to apply at least three months before the current permit expires. Submitting an application in a timely manner allows the applicant to maintain legal residence while the case is being processed.

Start 90 days ahead

Early submission accounts for administrative processing times and potential requirements for biometrics or supplementary documentation.

The process

  1. 1Identify the correct application form based on the specific permit type via the New to Denmark portal.
  2. 2Complete the application form and pay the required processing fee online.
  3. 3Collect necessary supporting documents, such as proof of ongoing employment, study status, or family ties.
  4. 4Submit the application online or print and sign it to submit in person at a designated Citizen Service centre (Borgerservice).
  5. 5Book an appointment to have biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) recorded if requested by the authorities.
  6. 6Wait for the decision notification, which will be sent to the applicant's digital mailbox (e-Boks or Mit.dk).

What to bring

  • Valid passport or travel document
  • Current residence permit card
  • Documentation verifying the basis for the extension (e.g., employment contract, enrollment letter, or marriage certificate)
  • Proof of payment of the processing fee

Fees vary significantly depending on the type of permit and the applicant's circumstances. Current fee schedules must be verified directly on the official New to Denmark website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Submitting an application after the current permit has expired may lead to the loss of legal status and the requirement to leave the country.
  • Failure to provide accurate or complete information can result in delays or the rejection of the extension application.
  • Ensure all digital signatures and payments are processed correctly to avoid administrative hold-ups.
