Residence permit renewal in United Kingdom

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

Renewing a UK residence permit, typically held as a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), involves submitting an online application to extend stay or switch into a new immigration route. Applicants must confirm their identity, provide updated biometric information, and pay the relevant health surcharge and processing fees.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to start the renewal process at least 3 months before the current leave expires. This accounts for potential delays in processing times and the availability of biometric appointment slots at service centers.

Start 90 days ahead

Allows for application preparation, potential document gathering, and administrative processing times.

The process

  1. 1Identify the correct visa category for the extension via the UK government website.
  2. 2Complete the online application form and pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
  3. 3Upload supporting documentation to the online portal or prepare physical copies if requested.
  4. 4Book and attend an appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Service (UKVCAS) center to provide biometric information.
  5. 5Wait for the decision notification, after which a new Biometric Residence Permit or digital status notification will be issued.

What to bring

  • Current valid passport or travel document
  • Evidence of current legal status in the UK
  • Proof of meeting the financial requirements for the specific visa route
  • Evidence of English language proficiency if required
  • Tuberculosis test results if applicable to the applicant's country of residence

Fees vary significantly depending on the visa category, the length of the extension, and whether an Immigration Health Surcharge is required. Current fee schedules are published on the official UK government immigration portal.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to submit the application before the current leave expires, which may affect future immigration eligibility.
  • Providing inconsistent information compared to previous visa applications.
  • Missing deadlines for providing biometric data after the initial application submission.
