Health insurance renewal in Vietnam

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Bảo hiểm xã hội Việt Nam (Vietnam Social Security).

Renewing health insurance in Vietnam typically involves paying the premium for the next period, often through an authorized collection agent or directly with Vietnam Social Security. The health insurance card (BHYT) may be reissued or its validity simply extended, depending on the specific policy type and renewal method.

Your timing

Most people are advised to begin the renewal process for their health insurance approximately 1-2 months before its expiration. This allows ample time to complete payment, for the processing of new cards if necessary, and to avoid any gaps in coverage, especially if there are administrative delays.

Start 60 days ahead

To ensure continuous coverage and account for processing times, particularly if a new card needs to be issued or if using an intermediary payment service.

The process

  1. 1Check the expiration date of the current health insurance card.
  2. 2Identify the applicable renewal method, which often depends on whether one is covered by an employer, voluntary scheme, or household-based insurance.
  3. 3For voluntary or household-based insurance, contact an authorized collection agent (e.g., post office, local commune/ward People's Committee) or the local Vietnam Social Security office.
  4. 4Pay the premium for the desired renewal period (e.g., 6 months, 12 months).
  5. 5Collect the new health insurance card or confirm the extension of the existing one, if applicable, from the point of payment or the Vietnam Social Security office.

What to bring

  • Current health insurance card (BHYT card)
  • Identity document (e.g., National ID card or Citizen ID card)
  • Household registration book (Sổ hộ khẩu) or temporary residence confirmation (Sổ tạm trú) for household-based insurance renewals
  • Proof of payment for previous premiums, if requested

The cost of health insurance in Vietnam varies based on the type of participant (e.g., employee, household member, voluntary participant), income, and the duration of coverage (e.g., 6 months, 12 months). It is a percentage of a base salary or a fixed amount. Specific fees should be confirmed with the local Vietnam Social Security office or an authorized collection agent at the time of renewal.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure timely renewal to avoid gaps in coverage, as a new waiting period might apply if coverage lapses.
  • Verify the accuracy of personal information on any newly issued card.
  • Understand the specific premium rates and subsidies applicable to one's insurance type and region, as these can change annually.
  • Keep receipts or proof of payment for the renewal premium.
