Vehicle inspection renewal in Vietnam

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Cục Đăng kiểm Việt Nam (Vietnam Register).

Renewing a vehicle inspection in Vietnam involves preparing the necessary vehicle documents and the vehicle itself, then taking it to an authorized inspection center for evaluation and certification.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to initiate the renewal process a few weeks before the current inspection certificate expires. This allows ample time to schedule an appointment if required, address any minor vehicle issues that might arise during inspection, and account for potential waiting times at the inspection centers.

Start 14 days ahead

This lead time accounts for potential scheduling, travel to the inspection center, and any minor repairs that might be needed if the vehicle fails the initial inspection.

The process

  1. 1Prepare the required documents for the vehicle, including the vehicle registration certificate (Giấy đăng ký xe) and the previous inspection certificate (Giấy chứng nhận kiểm định).
  2. 2Ensure the vehicle is in good working condition, with all required safety features, emissions systems, and components functioning correctly, as per Vietnamese regulations.
  3. 3Locate an authorized vehicle inspection center (Trung tâm đăng kiểm xe cơ giới) within Vietnam. These centers are often listed on the Vietnam Register's website.
  4. 4Drive the vehicle to the chosen inspection center for the technical evaluation. The inspection will cover various aspects such as brakes, lights, steering, emissions, and chassis integrity.
  5. 5Pay the inspection fee as determined by the center. The fee schedule is regulated by the Ministry of Finance.
  6. 6Upon successful inspection, receive the new inspection certificate (Giấy chứng nhận kiểm định) and the inspection stamp (Tem kiểm định) to be affixed to the vehicle windshield.
  7. 7If the vehicle fails the inspection, address the identified issues and return for a re-inspection within a specified timeframe.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate (Giấy đăng ký xe)
  • Previous inspection certificate (Giấy chứng nhận kiểm định)
  • Compulsory civil liability insurance certificate (Giấy chứng nhận bảo hiểm trách nhiệm dân sự bắt buộc - though this is often checked separately, it's good practice to have it)

The cost for vehicle inspection is regulated by the Ministry of Finance of Vietnam. The specific fee can vary based on the type of vehicle (e.g., passenger car, truck, motorcycle) and is subject to change. It is advisable to confirm the current fee directly with the inspection center or refer to the latest circular from the Ministry of Finance.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the vehicle meets all technical and safety standards, as inspectors are strict about compliance. Common issues include faulty lights, worn tires, excessive emissions, and non-standard modifications.
  • Check the validity period of the current inspection certificate to avoid driving with an expired certificate, which can result in fines.
  • Verify the operating hours and any specific requirements of the chosen inspection center before visiting, as some might require appointments or have particular procedures.
  • Be aware of any recent changes in inspection regulations or fee structures by consulting official sources like the Vietnam Register or the Ministry of Finance.
