Health insurance renewal in Lithuania

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Valstybinė ligonių kasa (National Health Insurance Fund under the Ministry of Health).

Renewing health insurance in Lithuania typically involves ensuring continuous contributions to the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund, primarily managed by the National Health Insurance Fund (VLK) under the Ministry of Health. For employed individuals, contributions are usually deducted automatically from their salary, while self-employed or voluntarily insured persons need to arrange their payments.

Your timing

It is advisable for individuals who are not automatically insured (e.g., via employment or state support) to ensure their compulsory health insurance contributions are paid consistently. This prevents potential gaps in coverage and avoids accumulating debt for unpaid premiums, which can impact access to healthcare services.

Start 1 days ahead

For most individuals, health insurance coverage is continuous as long as they maintain their employment or continue making required contributions. If there is a change in status, clarifying insurance details promptly with VLK or Sodra is recommended.

The process

  1. 1Identify your health insurance status: Are you employed, self-employed, a state-insured person (e.g., student, pensioner, child), or voluntarily insured?
  2. 2For employed individuals, confirm that your employer is deducting and transferring compulsory health insurance contributions (PSD) to Sodra.
  3. 3For self-employed individuals, ensure regular monthly PSD payments are made to Sodra. This can often be done electronically via Sodra's e-services.
  4. 4For individuals not covered by employment or state insurance, consider registering for voluntary compulsory health insurance and making the required monthly contributions to Sodra.
  5. 5If there are any changes in your employment or social status (e.g., starting a new job, becoming unemployed, reaching retirement age), inform the relevant institutions (Sodra, Employment Service) as this may affect your insurance status.

What to bring

  • Personal identification document (e.g., passport, ID card) if interacting in person
  • Documents proving employment or social status (e.g., employment contract, student certificate, pension certificate) if clarifying status or applying for state insurance

The monthly compulsory health insurance (PSD) contribution rate and amount are set by law. For self-employed and voluntarily insured persons, this amount needs to be paid monthly. Specific rates should be confirmed with Sodra or VLK.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Missing PSD contributions can lead to accumulated debt and potential denial of non-emergency healthcare services.
  • Changes in employment status (e.g., job loss, starting a new business) require individuals to promptly assess and adjust their health insurance arrangements to ensure continuous coverage.
  • Errors in personal data or incorrect payment details can lead to contributions not being properly attributed, potentially causing issues with insurance status. Verify all details carefully, especially when making manual payments.
