Health insurance renewal in Luxembourg

How to renew health insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 2 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Caisse Nationale de Santé (CNS - National Health Fund).

Renewing health insurance coverage in Luxembourg is generally a stable process managed through the national social security system. Most residents are covered automatically by their employer or via the Caisse Nationale de Santé (CNS) as long as their professional or residency status remains valid.

Your timing

Most administrative transitions, such as starting a new job or moving, should be reported to the CNS as soon as they occur. Because processing times can vary depending on individual circumstances, it is advisable to ensure all changes are communicated to the relevant social security office immediately to avoid gaps in coverage.

Start 14 days ahead

While coverage is often continuous, processing updates to records or requesting specific reimbursements typically takes at least two weeks.

The process

  1. 1Verify that the employer has declared the change or status update to the Joint Social Security Centre (CCSS).
  2. 2Ensure the Luxembourg social security card (badge de sécurité sociale) is current and active.
  3. 3Submit any necessary registration or change-of-status forms provided by the CNS if not automatically handled by an employer.
  4. 4Confirm the activation of the updated insurance status through the CNS online portal, MyGuichet.lu, or by contacting a CNS office.

What to bring

  • Luxembourg social security number (matricule)
  • Valid identification document (Passport or ID card)
  • Proof of employment or residence, if required by the specific situation
  • Completed application or update forms provided by the CNS

Health insurance contributions are typically calculated as a percentage of gross income and deducted automatically by the employer; confirm current rates directly through the Joint Social Security Centre (CCSS) website.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to notify the CCSS or CNS promptly when changing employment or moving address can lead to administrative delays.
  • Ensure all contact information is up to date in the MyGuichet.lu system to receive important correspondence.
  • Verify that documentation submitted for reimbursement is complete, as missing receipts or incorrect codes are common causes for processing rejections.
