Motor insurance renewal in Luxembourg

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Insurance companies operating in Luxembourg, regulated by the Commissariat aux Assurances (CAA).

Renewing motor insurance in Luxembourg typically involves reviewing the current policy, comparing offers from different insurers, and formally accepting a new policy or continuing the existing one. Insurance companies usually notify policyholders of upcoming renewals.

Your timing

Most insurance policies automatically renew unless cancelled. However, it is advisable for policyholders to begin reviewing their options and comparing offers from various insurance providers at least one to two months before the policy's expiry date. This allows sufficient time to research, compare prices and coverage, and switch providers if desired without a lapse in coverage, considering that some administrative processes might take a few days.

Start 60 days ahead

To allow time for comparing different offers, submitting required documents, and processing a new policy if switching insurers, or simply confirming continuation with the current provider.

The process

  1. 1Receive renewal notice from the current insurance provider, typically a few months before the policy's expiration date.
  2. 2Review the existing policy's terms, coverage, and proposed renewal premium.
  3. 3Compare offers from other insurance companies in Luxembourg to ensure competitive pricing and suitable coverage for vehicle and driver needs.
  4. 4Decide whether to renew with the current insurer or switch to a new one. If switching, formally cancel the existing policy according to its terms (often requiring written notice).
  5. 5Confirm acceptance of the new or renewed policy by signing the agreement and making the first premium payment.
  6. 6Ensure the new insurance certificate (carte verte) is received and kept with the vehicle.

What to bring

  • Current insurance policy documents (for reference)
  • Vehicle registration certificate (Certificat d'immatriculation / Carte Grise)
  • Personal identification (e.g., identity card or passport)
  • Driver's license
  • Previous claims history (might be requested by new insurers)

The cost of motor insurance varies significantly based on factors such as the vehicle type, driver's age and experience, claims history, chosen coverage level, and the specific insurance company. Premiums are set by individual insurers and should be confirmed directly with them.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to compare offers: Auto-renewal may not always provide the most competitive rates or suitable coverage.
  • Missing cancellation deadlines: If switching insurers, adhere to the notice period specified in the current policy to avoid automatic renewal.
  • Lapse in coverage: Ensure there is no gap between the expiration of the old policy and the start of the new one.
  • Incorrect information: Providing inaccurate details about the vehicle or driver can invalidate the policy.
