Motor insurance renewal in Portugal

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Autoridade de Supervisão de Seguros e Fundos de Pensões (ASF) - Authority for the Supervision of Insurance and Pension Funds.

Renewing motor insurance in Portugal typically involves ensuring the policy remains active by paying the premium on time or, if switching providers, securing a new policy before the old one expires. Policies are often automatically renewed unless the policyholder expresses a wish to terminate or change the contract.

Your timing

Most motor insurance policies in Portugal have an annual renewal cycle. It is advisable for policyholders to review their policy and premium notification at least 30-60 days before the expiry date to allow ample time to compare offers, negotiate terms, or arrange a new policy with a different insurer without a lapse in coverage. This period also accounts for potential processing times for new policies.

Start 30 days ahead

This lead time allows for comparison of insurance offers, potential negotiations, or the processing of a new policy if switching insurers, ensuring continuous coverage.

The process

  1. 1Review the renewal notice and policy details provided by the current insurer. This usually includes the new premium amount and any updated terms.
  2. 2Compare the current offer with quotes from other insurance providers. This can be done directly with insurers or through insurance brokers.
  3. 3Decide whether to renew with the current insurer or switch to a new one. If opting for a new insurer, secure the new policy.
  4. 4If renewing with the current insurer, ensure the premium payment is made by the due date. Many policies automatically renew if no action is taken by the policyholder.
  5. 5If switching insurers, formally inform the current insurer of the decision not to renew, adhering to the notice period specified in the policy contract (typically 30 or 60 days before the renewal date).
  6. 6Obtain the new insurance certificate (Carta Verde) and sticker for the vehicle, if applicable.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate (Documento Único Automóvel - DUA)
  • Identification document of the policyholder (e.g., Cartão de Cidadão)
  • Driving license(s) of the main driver(s)
  • Previous claims history (if applicable, for new quotes)

The cost of motor insurance varies significantly based on factors such as the vehicle type, age of the driver, claims history, coverage level chosen (e.g., third-party liability, comprehensive), and the specific insurance provider. Policyholders should confirm the premium directly with their chosen insurer.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failure to formally cancel an existing policy with sufficient notice can result in automatic renewal and an obligation to pay the premium.
  • Allowing a lapse in insurance coverage, even for a short period, is illegal and can lead to penalties and legal issues in the event of an accident.
  • Not comparing offers from multiple insurers can mean missing out on better rates or more suitable coverage options.
  • Always ensure the new policy is active and the vehicle has valid insurance documentation before the old policy expires.
