Renewing a vehicle inspection in Portugal involves taking the vehicle to an authorized inspection center for a mandatory periodic technical inspection (Inspeção Periódica Obrigatória - IPO). The inspection assesses the vehicle's condition to ensure it meets safety and environmental standards.
It is generally advisable to schedule the inspection a few weeks before the current inspection certificate expires. This allows time to address any potential issues identified during the inspection, or to reschedule if needed, without the vehicle operating illegally after the expiry date. Some centers may have longer waiting times for appointments.

The process
- 1Verify the inspection due date on the current inspection certificate or vehicle registration document.
- 2Choose an authorized vehicle inspection center (Centro de Inspeção Técnica de Veículos). These can be found nationwide.
- 3Schedule an appointment with the chosen inspection center, if required by the center.
- 4Prepare the vehicle by ensuring it is in good working order and has all necessary documentation readily available.
- 5Take the vehicle to the inspection center on the scheduled date, along with the required documents.
- 6Pay the inspection fee directly at the center.
- 7Receive the inspection certificate (Ficha de Inspeção) upon successful completion of the inspection.

What commonly goes wrong
- Operating a vehicle with an expired inspection certificate can result in fines and potential seizure of the vehicle.
- If the vehicle fails the inspection, it will be issued a temporary certificate allowing a limited time (e.g., 30 days) to rectify the issues and undergo a re-inspection, which may incur an additional fee.
- Ensure all vehicle lights, tires, brakes, and safety equipment are in good condition prior to the inspection to avoid re-inspection requirements.
