Health insurance renewal in Portugal

Renewing the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in Portugal generally involves submitting a request to the Social Security Institute, often through their online services or in person. The card is typically valid for five years and should be renewed before its expiry.

Your timing

It is advisable to apply for renewal at least 15 days before the current card expires, especially if applying online. If applying in person or by mail, allow additional time for processing and potential postal delays.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiry date on the current European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
  2. 2Access the Social Security Direct (Segurança Social Direta) online portal or visit a Social Security service desk.
  3. 3Submit a renewal request, providing any necessary updated information.
  4. 4Await notification of the card's dispatch or collection.
  5. 5Receive the new EHIC by mail at the registered address or collect it as instructed.

What commonly goes wrong

  • The card is generally only issued to individuals who are beneficiaries of the Portuguese social security system and contribute to it, or their dependents.
