Driving licence renewal in Uganda

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Directorate of Road Safety (DRS) under the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT).

Renewing a Ugandan driving licence involves applying through the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) portal, making the necessary payments, undergoing a medical examination, and then submitting documentation to the issuing authority, typically the Ministry of Works and Transport, for processing and issuance of the new licence.

Your timing

It is generally advisable for individuals to begin the renewal process several weeks or even a few months before their current driving licence expires. This allows ample time to navigate potential appointment scheduling, gather all required documents, complete the medical examination, and account for processing times, which can sometimes extend beyond initial estimates. Starting early helps avoid any period where one might be driving with an expired licence.

Start 30 days ahead

This lead time accounts for the potential need to schedule a medical examination, prepare documents, complete online application steps, and allow for processing time by the authorities. While the actual processing might be quicker, starting a month in advance helps mitigate delays.

The process

  1. 1Initiate the application online: Visit the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) web portal and navigate to the driving licence section. Select the 'Renew Driving Licence' option.
  2. 2Generate a Payment Registration Number (PRN): Complete the online form with required details, and the system will generate a PRN for payment of the renewal fees.
  3. 3Pay the renewal fees: Pay the generated PRN at a designated bank, URA service center, or through mobile money platforms. Keep the payment receipt as proof.
  4. 4Undergo a medical examination: Obtain a medical examination from a certified medical practitioner to confirm fitness to drive. The medical report is a mandatory document.
  5. 5Submit documents to the issuing authority: Present the completed application form (from URA portal), payment receipt, original expired driving licence, medical certificate, and national identification to the relevant driving licence issuing office, typically under the Ministry of Works and Transport.
  6. 6Await processing and issuance: The submitted documents will be reviewed, and if approved, the new driving licence will be processed and issued. Collection details will be provided at the submission point.

The cost for driving licence renewal in Uganda typically varies depending on the validity period chosen (e.g., 1, 3, or 5 years). Specific fee amounts should be confirmed directly on the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) website or at their service centers, as these figures are subject to change. Fees are generally paid through a Payment Registration Number (PRN) generated on the URA portal.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the medical certificate is from a recognized and certified medical practitioner, as unapproved certificates may lead to rejection.
  • Verify the payment details and ensure the Payment Registration Number (PRN) is correctly generated and paid to avoid delays or issues with reconciliation.
  • The physical location for submitting documents after online application and payment might vary, so confirm the correct office with the Uganda Revenue Authority or Ministry of Works and Transport.
  • Check the validity period options carefully during the online application as fees vary based on the chosen duration.
