Driving licence renewal in Greece

How to renew a driving licence — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Υπουργείο Υποδομών και Μεταφορών (Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport).

Renewing a Greek driving licence involves submitting a formal application to the local transport department, typically after completing a medical examination. The process confirms that the driver still meets the necessary physical and mental requirements to operate a vehicle.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to initiate the renewal process at least 3 months before the current licence expires. This accounts for the time required to complete mandatory medical exams and potential appointment backlogs at the regional transport offices.

Start 90 days ahead

Allowing three months provides sufficient buffer for scheduling physician visits and internal administrative processing time.

The process

  1. 1Schedule and complete examinations with a certified physician to obtain a medical certificate.
  2. 2Pay the required administrative fees via the e-Paravolo system.
  3. 3Access the official Greek government portal to submit the application digitally using TaxisNet credentials.
  4. 4Upload any necessary supporting documentation, such as photographs and the medical certificate, if not automatically transmitted.
  5. 5Monitor the application status through the portal and collect the new physical card from the designated transport office when notified.

What to bring

  • Valid TaxisNet credentials
  • Medical certificate from a certified physician
  • Digital photograph and signature
  • Proof of payment of the administrative fees
  • Current driving licence

Fees vary based on the specific type of licence and administrative processing charges; these should be verified on the official Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport fee portal.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the physician performing the exam is officially certified by the Ministry of Transport, as general practitioner exams are not always accepted.
  • Check that personal details on the TaxisNet account match current records to avoid digital processing errors.
  • Be aware that different licence categories (e.g., heavy goods vehicles) may require additional testing or shorter renewal cycles.
