Motor insurance renewal in Greece

How to renew motor insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Επιτροπή Κεφαλαιαγοράς (Hellenic Capital Market Commission) and the Hellenic Insurers Association.

Renewing motor insurance in Greece involves selecting a coverage plan, paying the premium to an authorized insurer, and ensuring the new policy is registered in the vehicle's electronic records. Insurance is mandatory for all vehicles operating on public roads in Greece.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to initiate renewal at least 15 to 30 days before the current policy expires to account for administrative processing and to ensure there is no lapse in coverage, which is a legal requirement.

Start 30 days ahead

Early renewal prevents potential penalties for being uninsured in the electronic databases.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiry date of the current insurance contract.
  2. 2Obtain renewal quotes from licensed insurance providers or through an insurance broker.
  3. 3Select a coverage plan that meets the minimum statutory requirements for third-party liability.
  4. 4Complete the payment of the insurance premium to the provider.
  5. 5Confirm that the vehicle’s insurance status is updated in the central electronic database (managed by the AADE/Independent Authority for Public Revenue).
  6. 6Keep a digital or physical copy of the insurance certificate (Sima Asfalisis) in the vehicle.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration document (Adeia Kykloforias)
  • Personal identification (ID card or Passport)
  • Tax Identification Number (AFM)
  • Previous insurance policy details

Insurance premiums vary significantly based on vehicle type, engine capacity, driver history, and chosen coverage limits; these costs must be confirmed directly with individual insurance companies.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Driving without active, verifiable insurance leads to significant fines and the removal of license plates.
  • Ensure that the insurance company is authorized to operate in Greece by checking the official registry.
  • Verify that the renewal date is correctly uploaded to the AADE electronic system to avoid automated fines for uninsured vehicles.
