Vehicle inspection renewal in Greece

How to renew a vehicle inspection — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Υπουργείο Υποδομών και Μεταφορών (Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport).

Renewing a vehicle inspection in Greece involves scheduling an appointment at an authorized Private or Public Technical Control Center (KTEO). The process verifies that the vehicle meets safety and environmental standards required for legal operation on public roads.

Your timing

It is standard practice to schedule an inspection at least two to four weeks before the current certificate expires. This accounts for potential appointment wait times at popular stations and allows time to perform any necessary repairs if the vehicle fails the initial check.

Start 30 days ahead

Most motorists begin the process one month prior to the expiration date to ensure continuous compliance and avoid the risk of fines for lapsed documentation.

The process

  1. 1Verify the vehicle's next inspection date on the existing KTEO certificate.
  2. 2Select an authorized KTEO center, either public or private.
  3. 3Book an appointment via the center's website, by telephone, or through the national digital portal if available.
  4. 4Present the vehicle at the facility at the scheduled time for physical inspection.
  5. 5Receive the inspection report and, upon a successful pass, the updated certificate or sticker.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration document (Adeia Kykloforias)
  • Previous KTEO inspection certificate
  • Driver's personal identification or passport
  • Proof of payment for the inspection fee

Fees vary depending on the type of vehicle (motorcycle, passenger car, or heavy vehicle) and the specific KTEO center; these should be confirmed directly with the chosen facility.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to inspect the vehicle by the deadline results in significant late-payment surcharges.
  • Minor issues, such as misaligned headlights or worn tires, can lead to a 'fail' result, requiring a re-inspection.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation is valid and original, as copies may not be accepted.
