Driving licence renewal in Iran

Written from published rules on 26 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with پلیس راهور فراجا (RAHVAR FARAJA - Traffic Police of the Islamic Republic of Iran).

Renewing an Iranian driving license typically involves undergoing a medical examination, submitting required documents to the Traffic Police, and paying the associated fees. The process generally ensures that the driver still meets the health and administrative requirements to operate a vehicle.

Your timing

Most applicants are advised to initiate the renewal process several weeks to a few months before their current license expires. This allows ample time to schedule and complete the medical examination, gather all necessary documents, and account for potential processing delays or appointment availability at the Traffic Police offices.

Start 60 days ahead

This lead time accounts for scheduling medical examinations, gathering documents, and the processing time at the Traffic Police centers. It's generally advisable to start two months prior to expiry.

The process

  1. 1Undergo a mandatory medical examination to assess vision, hearing, and overall health suitability for driving. This must be done at approved medical centers.
  2. 2Obtain a certificate of health and eye test results from the medical center.
  3. 3Gather all required documents, which typically include the expiring driving license, national ID card (Kart Melli), birth certificate (Shenasnameh), personal photos, and proof of address.
  4. 4Visit a designated +10 police service center (پلیس+۱۰) or a Traffic Police department responsible for license issuance/renewal.
  5. 5Submit all documents, the medical certificate, and complete the application form.
  6. 6Pay the required renewal fees and any outstanding fines (if applicable).
  7. 7Await the issuance and delivery of the new driving license, which may be mailed to the registered address.

What to bring

  • Original expiring Iranian driving license
  • Original National ID card (Kart Melli) and a copy
  • Original Birth Certificate (Shenasnameh) and a copy
  • Recent personal photographs (specifications regarding size and background should be confirmed with the authorities)
  • Medical certificate (including eye test results) from an approved medical center
  • Proof of address (e.g., utility bill or national address registration document)
  • Fingerprints (may be taken at the service center)

The cost of renewal includes medical examination fees and Traffic Police administrative fees. The exact amounts vary and should be confirmed with the Traffic Police or relevant service centers at the time of application.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the medical examination is performed at an officially approved center; results from non-approved centers may not be accepted.
  • Confirm the exact specifications for personal photographs (e.g., background color, head covering requirements for women) as these are strict.
  • Check for any outstanding traffic fines, as these might need to be cleared before a license can be renewed.
  • Processing times can vary; applicants should confirm the estimated waiting period for the new license.
