Driving licence renewal in Czechia

How to renew a driving licence — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministerstvo dopravy (Ministry of Transport).

Renewing a Czech driving licence involves submitting an application to a local municipal authority with extended scope. Applicants must provide current identification and specific documentation to prove eligibility for the continued operation of motor vehicles.

Your timing

It is standard practice to begin the renewal process at least 3 months before the current licence expires. This accounts for administrative processing times and potential delays in scheduling appointments at municipal offices.

Start 90 days ahead

The application can be submitted up to 90 days before the expiration date; processing typically takes 20 days.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiry date on the current driving licence.
  2. 2Prepare the required identification and supporting documents.
  3. 3Visit a municipal authority with extended scope (obecní úřad obce s rozšířenou působností) in person or submit via the Citizen Portal if digital authentication is available.
  4. 4Submit the application and have a photograph taken on-site or provide a compliant digital photo as required by the specific office.
  5. 5Collect the new driving licence in person once notified that the document is ready.

What to bring

  • Valid identification (e.g., Czech identity card or passport)
  • Existing driving licence
  • Completed application form (available at the office)
  • Proof of permanent or temporary residence if applicable

A standard administrative fee is required for the issuance of a new driving licence; the specific amount should be confirmed with the local municipal office.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to provide a photograph that meets current biometric requirements.
  • Attempting to renew the licence at an office without the necessary extended scope jurisdiction.
  • Miscalculating the 90-day window, which may lead to a lapse in driving privileges.
