Vehicle inspection renewal in Czechia

How to renew a vehicle inspection — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 31 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministerstvo dopravy (Ministry of Transport).

Renewing a vehicle inspection in the Czech Republic, known as a Technical Inspection (technická prohlídka), involves taking the vehicle to an authorized Station for Technical Inspection (STK). The process verifies that the vehicle meets safety and environmental standards required for operation on public roads.

Your timing

It is standard practice to schedule an appointment several weeks before the current inspection certificate expires. Appointment availability at inspection stations can fluctuate depending on seasonal demand, and booking in advance helps ensure the vehicle remains legally compliant without interruption.

Start 30 days ahead

Starting the process at least 30 days before expiration allows sufficient time to address any potential repairs if the vehicle fails the initial inspection.

The process

  1. 1Locate an authorized Station for Technical Inspection (STK) in the region.
  2. 2Book an appointment for the inspection, as walk-ins may not be accepted or may involve long wait times.
  3. 3Present the vehicle along with the required documentation to the technician.
  4. 4Wait for the inspection results, which cover safety, mechanical, and emissions systems.
  5. 5Receive the inspection report and the updated technical certificate upon passing the inspection.

What to bring

  • Vehicle Registration Certificate Part I (Malý technický průkaz)
  • Vehicle Registration Certificate Part II (Velký technický průkaz/Osvědčení o registraci vozidla)
  • Protocol of previous inspection (if available)

Fees for technical inspections are set by the individual inspection stations and are not government-fixed; check the price list directly with the chosen STK.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all mandatory safety equipment, such as the emergency vest and first-aid kit, is present and within expiration dates.
  • Verify that the vehicle's VIN plate is legible and matches the registration documents.
  • Perform basic maintenance on lights and tires before the appointment, as these are common causes for failing the inspection.
