How to renew a driving licence — how it works anywhere

Renewing an Estonian driving licence involves submitting a new medical certificate and applying through the Transport Administration's e-service portal or at a service office. Most applicants can complete the entire process digitally if their medical data is already updated in the system.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to initiate the renewal process at least one month before the current licence expires. This accounts for the time required for medical practitioners to submit electronic certificates to the traffic register and for the production and delivery of the new physical card.

The process

  1. 1Obtain a new electronic medical certificate from a family doctor or occupational health physician.
  2. 2Verify that the doctor has submitted the digital certificate to the traffic register.
  3. 3Log in to the Transpordiamet e-service portal using ID-card, Mobile-ID, or Smart-ID.
  4. 4Complete the application form and pay the state fee if required by the system.
  5. 5Select the delivery method, typically via post to a registered address.

  • Valid ID-card, Mobile-ID, or Smart-ID for digital authentication
  • Electronic medical certificate (linked to the applicant's personal ID code)
  • Existing physical driving licence (if presenting in person at a service office)

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the medical certificate is correctly uploaded to the digital traffic register by the medical provider.
  • Verify that the digital photo and signature data stored in the population register are current.
  • Confirm that the residential address on file is up to date, as the card will be mailed to this location.
