Driving licence renewal in Serbia

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Ministarstvo unutrašnjih poslova Republike Srbije (Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia).

Renewing a Serbian driving licence typically involves submitting an application at a police station (MUP), along with required documents such as identification, the old licence, and proof of payment for administrative fees. A medical examination certificate is also usually necessary.

Your timing

It is generally advisable to initiate the renewal process several weeks before the current driving licence expires. This allows ample time to gather all necessary documents, schedule a medical examination, and account for potential waiting times at administrative offices or for the processing of the new licence.

Start 30 days ahead

This lead time accounts for the time needed to obtain a medical certificate, gather other documents, and potential processing time at the MUP office.

The process

  1. 1Obtain a medical examination certificate from an authorized health institution, confirming fitness to drive.
  2. 2Gather all required documents, including the old driving licence, a valid ID card, and proof of payment for administrative fees.
  3. 3Visit the nearest police station (Policijska uprava / Policijska stanica) or MUP branch responsible for driver documentation.
  4. 4Submit the application form and all collected documents to the MUP official.
  5. 5Pay any remaining administrative fees, if not already done.
  6. 6Collect the new driving licence once it is issued and ready for pick-up, typically within a specified timeframe.

What to bring

  • Valid medical examination certificate (Lekarsko uverenje)
  • Old driving licence (Vozacka dozvola)
  • Valid identification card (Licna karta)
  • Proof of payment for administrative fees (Dokaz o uplacenim taksama i naknadama)

Who handles it

The cost involves several administrative fees and charges for the medical examination. Specific amounts should be confirmed on the official MUP website or at the MUP office, as they may be subject to change.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the medical examination certificate is current and obtained from an authorized institution, as it has a limited validity period.
  • Verify the exact amounts and payment instructions for all administrative fees, as these can be updated periodically.
  • Check the MUP's website or contact them directly for current operating hours and any potential appointment requirements at specific police stations.
  • Confirm whether a new photograph is required, or if an existing photograph from a recent ID card can be used.
